Medication Administration Certification (MAT)

New York State law requires child care providers to be certified to administer any medication beyond over-the-counter topical ointments, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Components of MAT certification include:

  • Successful completion of the 8-hour MAT class, including written quizzes and skill demonstrations
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Completion of a Health Care Plan

Fees:

  • Classroom-based MAT Training: $120
  • Independent Study MAT Training: $80

MAT Grant Reimbursement:

Providers who complete MAT training are eligible for rebates contingent on funding availability:

  • Up to $100 for classroom MAT
  • Up to $70 for independent study MAT

To apply for a MAT grant rebate, visit the NYS Professional Development Program.

Health Care Plans

A Health Care Plan is a mandatory requirement for any child care program administering medication. It outlines your program’s medical policies and procedures, including safe handling of medications. Your program’s Health Care Consultant must review the plan before submission to the Office of Children & Family Services (OCFS) for final approval.

Who Is Exempt from MAT Training?

MAT training is not required for:

  • Individuals who do not administer medication or only administer over-the-counter topical ointments, sunscreen, and insect repellent
  • Relatives of the child, including parents, step-parents, guardians, or close family members (third-degree relatives)
  • Licensed medical professionals such as physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, licensed practical nurses, or advanced EMTs
